Ohi is an 18 year old student, who has recently found that wigs provide her the variety and ease that her busy college life demands. However, it has been a long journey to here for Ohi. Read her hair story below! You can find Ohi on Instagram at @ohidiani.
My name is Ohi, I am 18, I go to Quinnipiac University, and I’m a freshman studying political science, and I am *thinking* of minoring in international business. I’ve been natural my entire life, which is very rare, especially where I come from, which is Nigeria. When I was about 5, I remember my mom almost relaxed my hair and my dad flipped out. He didn’t want me to have relaxed hair or any chemicals in my hair because he thought I was too young. In December 2015, I remember this because I cried, it was my friend’s birthday and I went to the salon and as they were straightening my hair, I saw my hair on the floor. My mom screamed and was like “Just stop! Everything is falling out!” so we stopped, and there was this like clump of my hair that was a lot shorter than the other, so they had to chop. It was so bad. So it was like starting from scratch. It was very weird because from about 2016 that’s when everybody started going natural and started this whole natural hair movement. But, with me it was like I’ve always been natural so this really isn't a new stage in life for me. I was now just working on making sure that it stayed healthy. I started swimming competitively in primary school. And once I started that whole swimming journey it was very hard for me to maintain my hair. I got my first sew in when I was in Year 8, so I was like 13. That summer I was actually going to a swim camp, and I couldn’t have my natural hair out it would have just been too hard and there was nowhere in London to actually get proper cornrows done. So my mom just got a sew-in for me because she said it would just be easier. I just got introduced to wig life, and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me! Sew-ins are nice because you don’t have to worry about your wig falling off everything but wigs are easier for me. So this wig is made from a closure and three bundles. And the guy that actually does my sew-ins made this wig. Underneath I have my hair in cornrows and I can take my wig off and oil my scalp everyday. Then it’s also a different look -- I’ve never done dyed tips before. I like wigs because you can try new things. So this is my fave thing right now.
